Nineteen-year old Azamat Tazhayakov is from Kazakhstan and attends the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. His acquaintance with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is believed to be responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing, unfairly led to his arrest and federal indictment for charges associated with evidence tampering. Seeking justice in federal court cases is difficult under the best of circumstances given the number of federal agencies and court personnel involved. In a high profile case like the Boston Marathon bombing, when the defendant is a foreigner attending school in the United States, even more barriers to justice are added in terms of media coverage, language, culture, and perspectives.
Millions of people around the world are quite familiar with the Boston Marathon bombing incident. In summary, Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are believed to be responsible for making two bombs out of pressure-cookers and setting them off near the 2013 Boston Marathon finish line on April 15, 2013. There were 3 deaths and over 260 injuries. Within the next 3-4 days, many associated events took place, including the shooting of an MIT officer and a gunfight between the police and Tamerlan Tsarnaev that led to his death in the early morning hours of April 19, 2013. Tamerlan’s brother was captured 15 hours later. Azamat Tazhayakov had absolutely nothing to do with any of these events.

Both young men face charges that include conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of justice. Azamat did not destroy, conceal, or cover up anything.
