The close family ties Azamat Tazhayakov claims are clearly displayed each time his father, Ismagoulov Amir Tazhayakhovich, gives comments to media. When Ismagoulov heard about the Boston Marathon bombing, he quickly called Azamat to ask if he was okay. Soon after, Azamat Tazhayakov was arrested and his father immediately flew to the United States and has been a rock of support. It is easy to dismiss a father’s avid claims of innocence for Azamat, but there is absolutely nothing in the family’s past to make anyone believe Azamat is a terrorist or would support a terrorist. He earned good grades in high school, is close to his family, and has never made any public comments that would cast suspicion on him. Azamat has a lot to look forward to, working in his father’s business and enjoying a respectable life.
As would be expected, the media coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing and subsequent arrests has been extensive. Every major newspaper and media company in the country has covered the event, including the USA Today, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Herald, The Boston Globe, The LA times, Bloomberg, Reuters and Associated Press, to name a few. The reporting in Kazakhstan has questioned the Boston prosecutor’s motivations but most often expresses bewilderment that Azamat went to the United States to find the American dream and now is facing 25 years in prison.
The reporting is quite similar from news report to news report. However, the real truth is told in some cases like when the Boston Globe reported on May 8, 2013 that, “Ismagoulov said he told his son to cooperate fully with authorities and pointed out that Tazhayakov talked to authorities for hours without a lawyer. The next day, April 20, his son was in jail for civil immigration violations, which were postponed when authorities filed criminal charges last week against Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev.” (The Boston Globe, May 8, 2013)
Ismagoulov has faith in the U.S. legal system. “The U.S. is trying to show democracy to the whole world. The court will figure it out and the jury will make the right decision.” (USA Today, Aug 13, 2013)
